Warning Signs Your Septic System Needs Repair, Not Just Pumping

When Your Septic System Calls for Repair, Not a Pumping

Slow drains that put up a fight no matter what you do? Soggy ground in the yard or an offensive smell around the tank? You may be left to wonder if a bit of pumping will put right the problem or if there is more to it.

For over 15 years Mustang Septic Services has been putting those very questions to rest for homeowners and businesses in the Brazos Valley and Central Texas. Give us a ring at (936) 215-5176 to speak with one of our people who have septic systems down pat.

It is a common belief among some that a good pumping is the cure for any septic woe. Occasionally so. But not in every instance. A pump will empty your tank but it is not going to mend a cracked pipe or a drain field on its last legs. To spare yourself the stress and expense, it helps to know the distinction.

The Limitations of Pumping

You should have your system pumped as part of routine upkeep to get rid of the accumulated solids and have things running properly. But that is only dealing with the buildup, not the breakdown.

Consider this: when your tank seems to fill up at an unseemly rate or old problems reappear after a pump-out, you are probably looking at a structural or mechanical matter. In such cases repair is called for. The good news is an early intervention will typically be a less costly affair.

Some Telling Warning Signs

Then there are the septic issues that bide their time until they are of a serious nature. These are the indications that you are in need of a repair:

  • Water standing on your drain field or spongy soil in its absence of rain
  • An odor of sewage, inside or out, that persists even after a pump-out
  • Gurgling from the toilet and slow drains in more than one place in the house
  • Grass of a vivid green colour and growing fast over the drain field, a sure sign of a leak in the soil
  • Backups in the tubs, sinks or toilets
  • Drains that seem fine for a week or two post-pumping before giving you trouble again

Any of these and a pump-out is just a stopgap, not a solution.

What Is the Real Problem?

If pumping is not enough, the reason is generally something along these lines and each requires its own remedy:

  • Waste or groundwater getting into places it ought not because of a compromised tank
  • Clogged or broken pipes at the inlet or outlet
  • Solids making it into the field by way of a filter or baffle past its prime
  • Roots having made their way into the tank or pipes
  • A drain field that has lost its capacity to absorb

From above ground they can all appear much the same. An experienced inspection is therefore important. We are fully licensed and insured and hold a Texas OSSF Installer License (OS0038227), so the diagnosis we give is one you can put your trust in.

The Cost of Waiting

Put off a repair and it will not come any cheaper. What was a small crack will grow; a drain field in distress can go completely, and that is among the priciest of repairs. Beyond the cost to your wallet, a system in failure is a risk to the groundwater and to your property and family. Early action is the best protection.

We have flexible financing available for more substantial work and installations. And we extend a 10% courtesy discount to police, first responders and veterans in appreciation of what they do.
